These are not easily quantified, yet they define whether an intervention has genuinely shifted the trajectory of a community. Unfortunately, field staff conducting assessments often lack emotional investment. Their reports emphasize scale over depth: 1,000 people earning ₹1,000 each is rated higher than 50 individuals consistently earning ₹10,000. College students should be encouraged to spend at least 4–6 weeks interning with social enterprises. This experience not only broadens their understanding of the sector but also nurtures empathy—an essential quality for future leaders.

For students, such internships provide exposure to grassroots realities. They learn how social enterprises tackle challenges like sustainability, livelihood creation, and community empowerment. Unlike classroom lessons, these experiences are immersive, teaching adaptability, problem‑solving, and cultural sensitivity. Students return with a deeper appreciation of social impact and a stronger sense of responsibility toward society.

For the enterprises, the benefits are equally significant. Many social organizations operate with limited resources and cannot afford to hire young graduates full‑time. Interns bring fresh perspectives, digital skills, and innovative ideas that help bridge generational and demographic gaps. Their energy and curiosity often spark creative solutions, while their presence strengthens the organization’s connection to younger audiences.

At CraftsAQ, we have been actively encouraging such internships. By connecting students with artisans supported by the Mon Ami Foundation, we create opportunities for them to witness firsthand the resilience, creativity, and individuality of craft communities. This exposure not only enriches students’ learning but also deepens their empathy for artisans whose livelihoods depend on sustainable growth and fair opportunities. It is a powerful way to blend youthful innovation with traditional wisdom.

Educational institutions play a pivotal role in making this connection possible. By integrating social internships into academic programs, colleges can encourage students to step outside conventional career paths. When universities champion these initiatives, they create a culture where social responsibility is valued alongside academic excellence.

In essence, internships in social organizations foster a symbiotic relationship—students gain empathy and practical insights, while enterprises benefit from youthful innovation.

It’s a demanding standard, especially when multiple artisans are racing against deadlines. Even when the design criteria are met, subtle differences emerge—tiny variations in curve, finish, or detail.

Our buyers, though supportive of artisan work, often come from a background of purchasing bulk, machine-made imports from neighbouring countries. They are accustomed to absolute uniformity: rows of identical products, each indistinguishable from the next. Against that backdrop, our handcrafted pieces sometimes feel “different.” And so begins the delightful conversation: why should they all look the same?

Machines excel at replication. They erase individuality in favour of efficiency. But handmade products carry the imprint of the human hand—the rhythm of the artisan’s skill, the nuance of their touch, the story of their craft. Each piece is not just an object; it is a signature. When we pause from machine-made perfection, we discover beauty in individuality. The slight differences are not flaws; they are proof of authenticity.

Uniformity has its place in mass production. But in artisan work, sameness risks stripping away the very soul of the craft. Buyers who embrace individuality are not just purchasing a product; they are investing in heritage, creativity, and human connection. Each turtle, while similar, carries its own personality. And isn’t that worth celebrating?

So, the next time someone asks why all the turtles don’t look the same, perhaps the better question is: why would we want them to?

This emotional connection is seen as adding “immense value.”

Read more about our artisan stories at www.monamifoundation.com

2. Preferred Crafts
Terracotta pottery, wooden carvings, and traditional paintings like Madhubani or Pattachitra emerged as the most loved categories. Interestingly, younger buyers leaned toward eco‑friendly materials and sustainability, while older respondents emphasized heritage and uniqueness.
3. Shopping Habits
Local melas and exhibitions remain the most trusted spaces for buying authentic crafts. Government emporiums also hold credibility, especially for those worried about fake or mass‑produced items. Social media platforms like Instagram are gaining traction among younger audiences who prefer direct access to artisans.
4. Budgets and Barriers
Most buyers spend between ₹1,000–₹3,000 on special pieces, though some are willing to go beyond ₹7,000 for truly unique items. The biggest turn‑off? Doubts about authenticity. High shipping costs and poor website design also discourage online purchases.
5. Building Connection
Respondents suggested handwritten notes, artisan videos, behind‑the‑scenes glimpses, and certifications as ways to strengthen trust. Many emphasized that showcasing the artisan’s livelihood and community impact makes the purchase feel more meaningful.
This research highlights that the future of handmade crafts lies in blending tradition with transparency. Buyers want authenticity validated, stories told, and artisans celebrated. For small brands, this means going beyond selling products—crafting experiences that connect heritage with modern expectations.

These insights are basis the research done by IIM Raipur MBA students in collaboration with our team. At Mon Ami Foundation, we’ve witnessed its magic firsthand through projects like the Craft Hub in Noida. Here’s the real question: Are CFOs and boards ready to measure social return on investment (SROI)?

It’s high time we swap the narrow lens of financial ROI for a wider view - one that sees profit and purpose as partners and not merely obligations

So, what’s SROI? It’s the yardstick that measures the social, environmental, and economic value of CSR efforts. For us at Mon Ami, it’s the lives transformed by handmade treasures—like the crocheted roses made by women artisans in NCR slums - or the community pride sparked at events like Serendipity Arts Festive (catch the highlights on LinkedIn). A Harvard Business Review article makes it clear: companies weaving social impact into their DNA gain a competitive edge - think stronger brands, loyal customers, and happier stakeholders. Yet, many boards still drag their feet. Why?

Let’s break it down. CFOs are wired for hard numbers - revenue, profit margins, cost sheets. SROI, with its blend of feel-good stories and crunchy data, can feel like a foreign language. How do you put a price tag on an artisan’s newfound confidence or a cleaner planet? It takes new tools, fresh mindsets, and a dash of courage - because let’s face it, CSR investments don’t always deliver instant cash returns. A Deloitte survey found 60% of execs struggle to quantify social impact, even as 80% see it as critical to long-term success. That’s a gap begging to be bridged.

At Mon Ami, we’re not just talking the talk - we’re walking it. Our projects aren’t just workshops; they are launchpad for skills, confidence, and sustainable livelihoods. Those crocheted roses? They’re funding school fees and family dreams. Our mental wellness sessions and IT inclusion efforts (check them out on our site) go deeper, building emotional resilience and digital know-how. The payoff’s real - an MIT Sloan Management Review study shows 75% of investment execs now prioritize sustainability, yet only 60% of corporate leaders think investors notice. That disconnect? It’s our sweet spot.

So, how do we win over the number-crunchers? Start with data that sings. Track jobs created - like the 50+ artisans we’ve empowered in Noida - or carbon slashed by sustainable crafts. Pair those with financial wins, like cost savings from local sourcing. A Forbes piece suggests blending SROI with traditional metrics can boost board buy-in by 25%. Our Market Linkage partners doesn’t just sell products – they grow micro-entrepreneurs, cutting poverty while delighting buyers.

But it’s bigger than spreadsheets. SROI taps into what’s driving the world today. Consumers are voting with their wallets - Nielsen data shows 66% will pay more for brands with purpose. Investors are leaning in too a BlackRock report predicts sustainable assets will hit $53 trillion by 2025. Boards ignoring this risk being left behind, while CFOs who embrace it can future-proof their firms. Imagine a company where every rupee spent on CSR lifts communities and the bottom line - that’s the SROI promise.

Still, it’s not a solo gig. Governments can sweeten the deal with tax breaks for social impact, like India’s CSR mandates under the Companies Act. Corporates can lean on partners like us to design projects with teeth - our Craft Hub’s a blueprint. At Mon Ami, we’re not stopping at “nice to have” - we’re pushing CSR into “must-have” territory, one measurable win at a time.

SROI isn’t just about doing good - it’s about doing smart, aligning profit with a purpose that lasts. Mon Ami Foundation’s ready to team up, showing corporates how to turn goodwill into gold. Let’s explore this together - because a future that benefits all isn’t just possible, it’s profitable.

At Mon Ami Foundation, we’ve thrown our heart into this model, empowering artisans across India to thrive as a collective. But here’s the reality check: capacity building is the biggest roadblock holding clusters back. Without it, even the brightest ideas can flicker out.

Picture our Craft Hub in Noida, a vibrant project fuelled by the HCL Foundation. Artisans here craft everything from the Gifts, Accessories to Nursery and Home décor. Each piece a testament to skill and spirit. But raw materials and talent alone don’t cut it. These makers need training, tech savvy, and market know-how to turn their crafts into livelihoods. AWorld Bank blog nails it training and infrastructure are the backbone of successful clusters, yet they’re the toughest nuts to crack.

Why is capacity building such a beast? For starters, diversity is a double-edged sword. Artisans hail from all walks of life rural weavers, urban slum dwellers, seasoned pros, and raw beginners. Crafting a one-size-fits-all program? That’s a logistical jigsaw puzzle. Then there’s the resource crunch. Training demands funding, skilled facilitators, and time luxuries are often scarce in remote villages or crowded slums. And don’t get me started on technology. Our pilots with edge computing (shared on LinkedIn) hint at a digital future, but scaling that to every artisan feels like climbing Everest in flip-flops.

At Mon Ami, we’re not ones to shy away from a challenge we’re rolling up our sleeves and diving in. Our mental wellness workshops (highlighted on our website) do more than teach stitches—they build emotional resilience, helping artisans weather setbacks. Our financial and IT inclusion programs are game-changers, to equipping Artisans to sell online, manage money, and dream bigger. Once limited to local bazaars, artisans now reaching buyers nationwide thanks to digital skills. It’s all tied to SDG 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth turning self-reliance into a reality, one artisan at a time.

The stakes are high, but so are the rewards. Empowered clusters don’t just survive, they thrive, driving local economies like mini engines of change. Skilled artisans churn out higher-quality goods, tap into bigger markets, and pocket better earnings. A McKinsey report on manufacturing clusters found that training can boost productivity by up to 20%. For us, it’s personal whose earnings mean children in school and communities with hope. Our Craft Hub’s success stories like a mother who now runs her own micro-business light the way.

We believe that it’s a marathon, not a sprint. Capacity building isn’t a quick fix; it’s a long-term investment. Governments need to step up with vocational programs—think India’s Skill India initiative scaled for artisans. Corporates can pitch in with funding or mentorship, as seen in our HCL partnership. NGOs like us? We’re the glue, tailoring solutions to fit real lives. A UNIDO study shows clusters with strong training ecosystems see 30% higher growth rates - proof this works when we all pull together.

And let’s not forget the human side. Capacity building isn’t just about skills, it’s about dignity. When an artisan masters a new technique or sells her first piece online, it’s a spark of pride that ripples outward. Our edge computing trials are a glimpse of what’s possible—imagine clusters where artisans track sales, connect with buyers, and innovate in real-time. Scaling that vision takes grit, but Mon Ami’s ready for the fight.

This isn’t just a hurdle - it’s the foundation of progress. For Mon Ami Foundation, capacity building is our call to action. We’re inviting partners - corporates, governments, dreamers—to join us in strengthening artisan clusters. Together, we can turn potential into power, building a future where every cluster shines. Ready to lend a hand?

But as the digital age picks up speed, we at Mon Ami Foundation are asking a big question: Is online a viable option for artisans? With most handmade goods still sold face-to-face, the leap to e-commerce can feel like stepping into the unknown. Spoiler alert: our journey says it’s not just viable, it’s a game-changer.

Since 2015, Mon Ami Foundation has been all about enabling artisans, helping them weave livelihoods with their crafts. For years, they sold at local markets, delighting buyers up close. Then came the pandemic, flipping the script. Suddenly, online platforms weren’t just an option, they were a lifeline. A Statista report predicts global e-commerce sales will soar to $6.4 trillion by 2025, and handmade goods are staking their claim in this digital goldmine.

Let’s zoom in on crochet flowers. These handcrafted blooms don’t just brighten homes—they carry stories of resilience from the women who make them. By taking them online, we’ve shattered geographic limits, connecting artisans in India’s slums to buyers in bustling cities and even across borders. Our offline efforts, like showcasing at the Serendipity Arts Festive (check out the buzz on LinkedIn), supercharge this digital push proving that a little in-person magic can spark big online wins.

So, why should artisans go online? First, it’s all about reach. A weaver in rural Uttarakhand can now sell to a design lover in Mumbai or New York without leaving home. Second, it’s cost-smart. Forget renting a stall or hauling goods to markets; platforms like Etsy, Amazon Handmade, or even a simple website can do the heavy lifting. Third, it’s green. Digital sales cut down on travel and packaging waste, aligning with sustainability goals like those in the UN’s SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). A Forbes piece notes e-commerce can reduce carbon footprints by up to 30% compared to traditional retail - pretty compelling, right?

But many artisans face steep hurdles - digital literacy is a big one. Not everyone knows how to snap a product photo or set up an online store. Access to tech, like smartphones or reliable internet, can be spotty too, especially in rural areas. That’s where Mon Ami rolls up its sleeves. Our capacity-building programs, like those at the Craft Hub in Noida with the HCL Foundation, weave IT inclusion into the mix. We’re helping artisans to navigate platforms, manage orders, and even market their work. The results? Stunning. As our co-founder shared onLinkedIn, these women are blooming with confidence—and their sales are following suit.

The numbers back this up. AShopify study found that 70% of handmade sellers saw revenue growth after going online, with many tapping into global markets. For Mon Ami, it’s more than profit - it’s empowerment. Online sales mean steady income for artisans, which means better education for their kids, healthier families, and stronger communities. Plus, there’s a growing appetite for authenticity - consumers crave the stories behind their purchases, and handmade goods deliver. ANielsen report shows 66% of buyers will pay more for products tied to social good. That’s a golden opportunity knocking.

Still, it’s not about ditching offline sales - it’s about blending the best of both worlds. Physical markets build trust and community; online platforms scale that magic. At Mon Ami, we’re testing this hybrid model, using events like Serendipity Arts Festive to draw eyes offline, then directing them to digital storefronts. It’s a step toward economic empowerment and sustainability, one click at a time.

Ready to dive in? Artisans, start small snap some photos, list a few items on a marketplace, or team up with us for training. Supporters, spread the word - every share helps a craft find its home. For Mon Ami Foundation, the digital frontier isn’t just viable it’s vital. Let’s explore it together, because every handmade product deserves to shine on the global stage.

As an independent, not-for-profit trust registered in India since 2015, we’ve learned one truth over the years: collaboration is the heartbeat of sustainable business. From empowering artisans to sparking economic growth, our work thrives when we join hands with others. It’s not just about doing good - it’s about doing good together.

Take our Craft Hub initiative in Noida, supported by the HCL Foundation. This isn’t your average project - it’s a living, breathing ecosystem where artisans, businesses, and communities grow side by side. Here, handmade products like intricately woven textiles and upcycled crafts don’t just find buyers; they fuel livelihoods and inspire sustainable practices. By partnering with corporates, NGOs, and local stakeholders, we’re showing that profitability and sustainability aren’t mutually exclusive. A Boston Consulting Group study backs this up - companies excelling in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria enjoy an 11% valuation premium over their peers. That’s the magic of purpose-driven collaboration!

So, why does collaboration matter so much? Sustainable development - like hitting the United Nations’ SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) - is a team sport. Solo efforts can only take you so far; real change demands shared resources, fresh ideas, and bold innovation. At Mon Ami, we’ve teamed up with heavyweights like A Hundred Hands, Dastkari Haat Samiti, The Serendipity Arts Foundation, to name a few, to spotlight artisan-made treasures at events (as we’ve shared on LinkedIn). These partnerships don’t just amplify our reach - they create vibrant markets for sustainable goods, proving handmade can mean big impact.

But let’s be real - it’s not all smooth sailing. Collaboration comes with its share of hiccups. Businesses chase profit margins, while NGOs like us prioritize social impact—finding common ground can feel like threading a needle in a storm. Add logistical challenges like coordinating across regions or securing funding, and you’ve got a puzzle worth solving. That’s where Mon Ami shines. We bridge the gap with initiatives that marry economic viability with social good. Our work with Offline Stores like Jhappi is a prime example - those vibrant crochet products crafted by women in NCR slums aren’t just pretty; they’re sustaining families and delighting buyers nationwide. It’s a win-win blooming from the toughest soils.

And the ripple effects? They’re huge. Collaborative efforts can reshape entire supply chains. A McKinsey report highlights how companies embedding sustainability into their core operations see improved resilience and customer loyalty. For us, it’s about more than numbers - it’s about the artisan who can now send her children to school or the community that gains pride in its craft heritage. Our mental wellness workshops, as noted on our website, tie into this too - building emotional strength alongside economic empowerment.

Want to jump in? Businesses don’t need to overhaul everything overnight. Start small: Partner with a local NGO (hint: we’re here!), invest in artisan training, or source materials sustainably. A Forbes article suggests cross-sector partnerships are key to tackling global challenges like climate change and inequality. At Mon Ami Foundation, we’re always on the lookout for collaborators who share our vision of a future where profit and purpose dance in step.

The world’s watching - consumers, too. A Nielsen survey found 66% of people are willing to pay more for sustainable brands. That’s a call to action for businesses, big and small, to lean into collaboration. Together, we can turn ideas into impact, crafting a world where commerce lifts communities rather than leaving them behind. At Mon Ami, we’re ready - how about you?

Money, on the other hand, is merely a tool - a facilitator, not the end goal.

This is a widely held belief in art circles. Doing craft for the fun of it, for the joy that comes with it. The objective of earning money is not supposed to be considered as an object in that experience.

And while this can be true for a strata of society where art is treated as recreation and money is no issue, or even for a group that has leveraged well-known forms of art to make a name for themselves and made money a non-issue thereafter, a large community of artisans in India still relies on art & craft as tools to earn money- liberation may follow thereafter.

Many of these artisans that Mon Ami Foundation works with come from communities that are not financially savvy. With women forming most of this group, they have traditionally focused on the household and left all things money to the men in their families - a father, a brother, a husband, or a son. Many don’t have bank accounts either, let alone any awareness of the instruments that they can leverage to save and grow their money.

That role is slowly changing. As these artisans get exposed to the world of 'commerce' - where they make something, it sells, and they get money in return - they are getting increasingly curious about what to do with that money. I remember conducting a session with a cohort of these artisans a couple of years back, and the curiosity, as expressed through their questions, was obvious. They wanted to know how to open bank accounts, how to obtain insurance, how to earn interest, and many such activities that we take for granted.

What is Financial Inclusion for These Artisans?

Financial inclusion is more than just having a bank account. It is about access to a system where their earnings are protected, their savings can grow, and they can plan for their future without financial fear. It means providing them with opportunities to manage their income effectively, access capital, and gain financial independence.

For an artisan, financial inclusion means being able to:

Save regularly: Even small savings, when accumulated over time, create a safety net

Access banking services: From opening a basic savings account to learning about mobile banking.

Invest in their craft: Being able to reinvest earnings into better tools to support their work

Secure their future: Understanding the benefits of insurance schemes

Break the cycle of dependence: Gaining financial literacy so they are not reliant on informal, high-interest money lenders

Why Is This Important?

Financial inclusion is not just about individual artisans - it influences their household, the community they live in and on the world around them. Children get better education, healthcare becomes accessible for the family, they start sending money back to the places they come from, and it creates a ripple effect.

Beyond immediate financial security, financial inclusion also empowers artisans with a sense of ownership and confidence. When women have control over their income, they are able to prioritize what they deem as essential expenses and contribute to their households on an equal footing. Over time, this shift not only improves their quality of life but also brings them at par in the society, a society that has historically sidelined women from financial decision-making.

As more artisans enter the financial system, their collective economic activity strengthens communities, promotes entrepreneurship, and enhances overall economic wellbeing. Simple exercises like maintaining a daily expense log and planning monthly savings goals help artisans take control of their finances.

Additionally, we introduce digital literacy as part of financial training, helping artisans understand mobile banking, digital transactions, and safe financial practices. Many artisans are unfamiliar with online payment methods, and by building their confidence in digital tools, we open doors to a wider market and financial security.

2. Bank Account Access & Support

Many artisans hesitate to visit banks due to lack of knowledge or intimidation. We work with financial institutions to simplify this process, guiding them through account opening, documentation, and usage. Our team helps artisans understand the benefits of formal banking, such as secure savings and earning interest.

We also conduct workshops in collaboration with experts who explain different banking products and how artisans can use them effectively. This ensures that artisans not only open accounts but also feel confident in using banking services independently. By removing barriers to banking access, we empower artisans to take the first step towards financial stability.

3. Encouraging Saving Habits

Through small savings groups, artisans are encouraged to set aside a fixed amount every month for a rainy day. These groups operate on the principle of collective motivation, where members hold each other accountable and celebrate milestones. Peer-driven accountability helps them stay consistent and build discipline around savings.

In addition to savings groups, we introduce artisans to structured saving instruments like recurring deposit accounts which offer secure and predictable returns. We also educate them on goal-based savings - whether for emergencies, education, or reinvesting in their craft - helping them see the long-term value of disciplined saving.

4. Capital Support

We collaborate with donors, NGOs, and Corporates to provide grants that help artisans invest in their craft. Whether it’s purchasing high-quality raw materials, upgrading tools, or setting up small home-based workshops, access to capital is essential for growth.

By providing the necessary financial backing, we ensure that artisans are not forced to rely on informal lenders who charge exorbitant interest rates, keeping them in perpetual debt. This access to financing helps artisans sustain and scale their businesses effectively.

5. Insurance Awareness

Educating artisans on health and life insurance ensures they are prepared for unforeseen events. Many low-income artisans lack access to basic insurance coverage, leaving them vulnerable to financial shocks. We work with government and private enterprises to facilitate their enrolment into insurance programs.

By ensuring that artisans have access to long-term financial safety nets, we provide them with peace of mind and the ability to plan for their future beyond daily sustenance.

A Future of Financial Freedom

Just as mastering an art form takes time, so does mastering financial independence. But with the right support, these artisans are proving that they are more than just creators - they are entrepreneurs, decision-makers, and changemakers,

As one artisan shared post my workshop, "Pehle sirf kamaana jaante the, ab humein bachana bhi aata hai."

At Mon Ami Foundation, we celebrate the power of this community of women, one that is financially included and independent. For us, financial inclusion is not just an initiative - it is a movement towards dignity, empowerment, and lasting change.

And yes, Art is indeed about liberation. Liberty to be financially independent. Liberty to prioritise expenses in the household. Liberty to choose a school for the children, hospital for the elderly, a nice day out for the family!

Liberty to be themselves. And we are committed to making it a reality for every artisan we work with.

Credit: Sameer Dubey
LinkedIn Profile
